Social Studies Projects in Canva & Sheets/Mapping

This week introduced Social Studies students to Canva for education. We looked at two templates around ancient Rome and Architecture.
Ex 1 Famous Landmarks
Ex 2 The History of Architecture

Students then created a variety of presentation this today.

Extension activity: I also introduced students to using Google sheets & Geomaps for Europe population and mapping. Here is the video to watch https://youtu.be/Gqn7wR7mAh8  and the file to follow along with  (This makes a copy of the spreadsheet for students to work) Get the Demo file: https://sethideclercq.com/SheetsMap

Using the Map Charts you can add an interactive map to visualize your data. An amazing feature of Google Sheets that will make your spreadsheets more interactive and stand out from the others. Follow along or use with students:
The above link will prompt you to create a copy and you can follow along with the steps in the video.

Digital Wellness and internet Safety

It's always important to look for opportunities so discuss Internet Safety and Digital Wellness with students. I have been promoting Canva for Education and they have several templates that can be used to create images. presentation and more. I have been working with middle school teachers and students around how students are spending their time outside of school with the use of media and technology.  I started with Applied Digital Skills from Google Managing your Time with Google Sheets. by totaling and graphing what a day or a week may consist of with technology .

We are exploring lesson from Commonsense.org/education such as
Digital Drama Unplugged along with other lessons and resources.

In addition, I was made aware of an upcoming series:
Digital Wellness Webinars will be offered in May over three Monday evenings: May 2, 16, & 23 (register here - twitter) The Topic is:
"Empower your students with a commonsense approach to digital tech and online safety"

March Learning Opportunities - Profile of a Graduate/ PoG, DLD Day, and more

March provided lots of opportunities for learning outside of the regular schedule.

Some of the areas we focused on Profile of a Graduate  PoG - with off-site meeting discussing skills needed for high school students to graduate. This was time well spent as the district plans for a new high school. The district work with the organization, Battelle for Kids, they hosted workshops with educators, families and students to discover the leading competencies that are important to our community.

The process culminated during the visioning sessions for the high school building project when the 11 leading competencies were discussed and the group ultimately selected the leading six competencies for our Portrait of a Nashoba Graduate. Communication, Creativity, Culturally Competent Global Citizenship, Empathy, Learners Mindset and Perseverance Later in the month we were invited to attend Strategy meetings to provide input.

Our district offered PD Session on Elevating Voices and Embracing Equity with several outside professional presenters.

I continue to co-teach graduate level classes in the area of technology and share that information at local conferences with colleagues that facilitate digital learning Medfield Day of Learning see on twitter.

I presented at Medfield Day of Learning,  This was the 10th Anniversary and I have probable attended seven of  them! This year we presented on Canva for Education -  Canva  presentation

In addition, I submitted a proposal for the upcoming fall MassCUE conference next October at Gillette Stadium and have encouraged colleagues in my district to consider presenting their work!
