Maximizing the Impact: "The Pivotal Role of Technology in a 21st Century Education System"

Maximizing the Impact: "The Pivotal Role of Technology in a 21st Century Education System"
In a new report, Maximizing the Impact: "The Pivotal Role of Technology in a 21st Century Education System", the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills urged renewed emphasis on technology in education.
The report urges federal, state and local policymakers and other stakeholders to take action on three fronts:
1. Use technology comprehensively to develop proficiency in 21st century skills. Knowledge of core content is necessary, but no longer sufficient, for success in a competitive world. Even if all students mastered core academic subjects, they still would be woefully underprepared to succeed in postsecondary institutions and workplaces, which increasingly value people who can use their knowledge to communicate, collaborate, analyze, create, innovate, and solve problems. Used comprehensively, technology helps students develop 21st century skills.
2. Use technology comprehensively to support innovative teaching and learning. To keep pace with a changing world, schools need to offer more rigorous, relevant and engaging opportunities for students to learn—and to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful ways. Used comprehensively, technology supports new, research-based approaches and promising practices in teaching and learning.
3. Use technology comprehensively to create robust education support systems. To be effective in schools and classrooms, teachers and administrators need training, tools and proficiency in 21st century skills themselves. Used comprehensively, technology transforms standards and assessments, curriculum and instruction, professional development, learning environments, and administration.
The report supports the Partnership for 21st Century Skills’ framework for 21st century learning, which calls for mastery of core subjects and 21st century skills. The report also highlights effective practices in states, districts and schools that are using technology to achieve results. And it provides guiding questions and action principles for policymakers and other stakeholders who are committed to maximizing the impact of technology in education.
Together, SETDA, ISTE and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills represent dozens of leading U.S. companies and organizations, six leadership states, education technology directors in all 50 states, 85,000 education technology professionals and 3.2 million educators throughout the country.

A celebration on 1/30 to showcase your work!
What a great class last night! I went home feeling a sense of accomplishment watching all of you capture your video and knowing that it works. What a relief! Our next class on 12/12 please bring your video in order to edit and post your best practice.
I mentioned in class that after attending the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference. http://www.nhcmtc.org/ in Nashua this week, I realized they majority of the topics at the conference are being covered in our class, (Smartboards, Clickers, Tablets, Web 2.0 Tools, blogs, wikis, rss, igoodle, video, etc). The progress that we have made in a few short months is significant!
I sent a message to Karen Martin suggesting our last class on 1/30 be a celebration to showcase our Best practices videos and to continue the conversation about Web 2.0 tools, emerging technologies and their impact on Lunenburg students. We can discuss the best process to communicate our needs in a positive manner. Maybe a VoiceThread http://www.voicethread.com/ (group conversations around images, docs and videos) exercise on the blog! I would like to extend an invitation to a few people in my district.
We can discuss this at our next class and determine an agenda. I think it’s important that your administration and colleagues see your progress!
Feel free to comment with your thougths!

VoiceThread - Technology in the Classroom Sample from Maine
I mentioned a voicethread sample yesterday that I saw at the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference. Cheryl Oakes from the Wells-Ogunquit School community in Maine showed her school blog and presentation to the school committee using Voicethread. A new tool that seems to be gaining popularity in the blogging community, here is the link.
http://wocsdtechtalk.blogspot.com/2007/11/presentation-to-school-committee-nov-7.html - or http://voicethread.com/#q.b19249.i111572
If you want to leave a comment (voice or text) you have to have create an account http://voicethread.com/#home (Voice thread is a group conversations around images, docs and videos. Transform your presentations, )
If you have time to experiment with the site let me know what you think!
This could be another way to demostrate a best practices instead of moviemaker.
Here is a link to the wiki at Christa http://www.nhcmtc.org/Extensions/?s=397 with all their links/handouts.

Pocket DV Cameras (Flip Video and AIPTEK)
There are many low end video devices to record student work to post to the web. Will Richardson is talking about the Flip Video in his blog http://weblogg-ed.com/2007/testing-flip-video/
I would like to test out the two devices with the class (FLIP and AIPTEK). One advantage to the AIPTEK model, I can record to a memory card and have multiple cards for students to use. It appears the Flip model would require students to pull their video immediately from the camera so another student could use.
Do you have a digital camera that will let you record a video? Try taking the video off the camera and saving to a computer. We can experiment with this in our next class.
Flip Video Ultra Series 60-min. Camcorder - Black (F260)
• Point-and-Shoot Video Camcorder For MPEG 4
• 2x Digital Zoom
• 0.31MP Digital Still
• 1.5" LCD Monitor
• Records in VGA-Quality Recording
• LCD Features Color TFT LCD Display, VGA Playback, Battery Information Display, Easy Color Menu System, LCD, 640 x 480 Resolution

2. Aiptek Zoom-DV 6MP Digital Camcorder
Note I have the Pocket DV model 5800, but could not find online.
• Digital Camcorder For MPEG 4; Works with Secure Digital Memory Card
• 3x Optical Zoom, 4x Digital Zoom
• 3MP CCD Video Resolution ; 6.0 Megapixel Digital Still
• 2.4" LCD Monitor
• Records in MPEG4 Video Clip Format
• LCD Features LCD
• 2GB Built-In Storage
• Flash Modes: Red-Eye Reduction
• White Balance: Fine
• Includes Adapter

The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM)
The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells as illustrated below.

Assignment - Make a Post this week! Articles from Technology and Learning Magazine and YouTube Article
Hi -
Last month I had each of you signup for a few free magazine subscriptions. When I got home tonight after class, my October issue of Technology and Learning was here. This months issues featured three articles that we discussed in class this evening.
1. Downloading YouTube Video - According to the article, the authors liked Zamar (and was able to move the file to his ipod). He tested several tools and like Zamzar, a free online file conversion service.
Here is the link to the article
http://www.techlearning.com/showArticle.php?articleID=196604743
"To use Zamzar, you can either upload a file or enter the file's URL, then choose a format you want to convert to, enter your email address (to receive a link to the converted file), and click Convert. I chose to convert to MP4 for my iPod. It took about three minutes for the conversion, and a few minutes later I received an e-mail telling me the file was done and giving me a link to download it."
Article 2 - Tablets
Tablets Dispensed article by Miguel Guhlin
A look at how to make the best decision when purchasing a slate or convertible (tablet, notebook/computer).
Article 3 Bandwith for streaming video
How Fast Is Fast Enough? (bandwith)by Karen Greenwood Henke - The issue of bandwidth is increasingly the question of the day at schools nationwide.
Read one of the articles, try the YouTube download here is a link to the class wiki(posted under Web 2.0 Tools and YouTube)http://lunenburgtech.pbwiki.com/Web+Tools Make a post here in the blog sharing your experience!

Future Technology PD
Several of you asked for a continuation of the Class (New Digital Technologies and Web 2.0 tools).
I found this online survey that plugs into the blog zoho and has several other features. Please take the poll and comment.
Are you interested in a follow-up class?
Part II of the class would be in a hybrid format. We can outline the details with Karen over the summer.
The class would be ten hours a month beginning September/October for four months.
- five hours month face to face (possibly Wednesday's 3:30-8:30 pm)
- five hours online using the class blog to implement and report back on Web 2.0 tools in the classroom.
- Other options could include multimedia, moviemaker, teaching online (using school center and/or blog). Please comment with your suggestions.
I also added a feature to the website so when you go over a url it shows you a snapshot of the website.
K-12 Online Conference that could be incoprated into our class.
The 2007 conference is scheduled to be held over two weeks, October 15-19 and October 22-26 of 2007, and will include a preconference keynote during the week of October 8. The conference theme is “Playing with Boundaries.”
This class has inspired be to try new things our class blog!

David Warlick talks about ... Of Course I think it Matters
Interesting observation about like long learning with teachers...
Of Course I think it Matters May 9, 2007 at 8:45 am · Filed under education
From David's Blog - There has been an astonishing and healthy conversation going on about the blog entry I wrote the other day about that NYTimes laptops piece. The entry is entitled, What’s good about the May 4 NY Times Article about Laptops in Schools. Last night, in his signature prickliness, Gary Stager (not his first comment on this blog post) lamented that we have had computers in classrooms for 25 years, and that some teachers still resist them indicates “…a conscious effort to be non-learners.”
I’ve claimed my own frustration at teachers who ask, “But who’s going to teach me how to do that?” Sadly, we are a generation who was taught how to be taught — not how to teach ourselves. It’s one of the many reasons why the experiences that our children have in the classroom must become much more self-directed, relevant, and rich. They/we need to learn to teach ourselves. Teachers shouldn’t need professional development. They should be saying, hey, I’m going to teach myself how to do that this weekend. It’s about life long learning. Not about a life of being taught.

What is RSS? Aggregators - Bloglines, GoogleReader, PageFlakes and more
RSS - Really Simple Syndication - content can be read using software called a "feed reader" or an "aggregator." The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.

The articles starts ... "Now to explain RSS the Oprah way
Today, I’m going to explain how RSS can help you live your best life online. We all have busy lives with very little time. Web surfing is fun but can take hours going to visit every single website and blog you enjoy. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if you could just get all the headlines of the most current stories from all your favorite websites and blogs in one place? Well now you can, and it is called RSS feed.
The Oprah definition - The technical acronym for RSS is “Really Simple Syndication”, an XML format that was created to syndicate news, and be a means to share content on the web. Now, to geeks and techies that means something special, but to everyday folks like you and me, what comes to mind is, “Uh, I don’t get it?”
So, to make RSS much easier to understand, in Oprah speak, RSS stands for: I’m “Ready for Some Stories”. It is a way online for you to get a quick list of the latest story headlines from all your favorite websites and blogs all in one place."
Bloglines is web-based personal news aggregator that can be used in place of a desktop client.

Getting Started Reading Blogs
Here are a few Blogs that I subscribe to
Weblogg-ed - Will Richardson collects ideas for Web logs in the classroom, asks questions to the teacher Web logging community, and reflects on his teaching.
2 Cents Worth -David Warlick, a 30 year educator, has been a classroom teacher, district administrator, and staff consultant with the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. For the past ten years, Mr. Warlick has operated The Landmark Project, a consulting, and innovations firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. His web site, Landmarks for Schools, serves more than ten-million visits a month with some of the most popular teacher tools available on the Net. David is also the author of three books on instructional technology and 21st century literacy, and has spoken to audiences throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America. David blogs at http://davidwarlick.com/2cents/.
Marc Prensky is relatively well known in educational technology circles for his 2001 article, "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants." (PDF) The vocabulary of referring to younger people as "the digital natives" for whom technology use comes more naturally and "the immigrants" to the digital landscape who comprise most of the adult population and teaching cadre in our schools and universities can be helpful in understanding the divides which often separate and define generations of learners.
Moving at the Speed of Creativity - Wesley Fryer
The Infinite Thinking Machine (ITM) is designed to help teachers and students thrive in the 21st century. Through an active blog, an Internet TV show, and other media resources, the ITM shares a "bazillion practical ideas" for turning the infinite universe of information into knowledge. We showcase examples of innovative instructional methods, talk with leading experts, and share real stories from the classroom to improve how we think, learn, teach, and live. And we try to have a little fun along the way.
A Difference - Darren Kuropatwa teaches math. A "difference" is one of the four fundamental operations. The slope of a line is calculated using a quotient of "differences" which, when we first study calculus, evolves into the "difference quotient" (AKA the derivative). Later we study "differential equations." The teachers in his department have decided to focus on using the teaching strategy Identifying Similarities and Differences. But more than all of this, the word "difference" suggests change. The breakneck evolution of technologies on the internet is changing they way we teach. It's hard to keep up.

speakingofhistory.blogspot.com/ Here is an article- After the Bell, Beyond the Walls: How middle schoolers use blogs, wikis, and podcasts to learn social studies by Eric Langhorst. I love reading about and learning new ways that teachers are currently using technology in a variety of disciplines to enrich their students’ learning.
The article discussed the way Eric uses podcosts and blogging technology to extend his teaching beyond the brick and mortar classroom. Eric creates “Studycasts” (podcasts) to help his students review for tests. He basically records himslef discussing, “major concepts that students needed to know for an upcoming unit test” (Langhorst, 74, Educational Leadership, May 2007). Students then download the content onto ipods, or he burns them a cd.

Not all students are alike.
Not all students are alike. Based on this knowledge, differentiated instruction applies an approach to teaching and learning so that students have multiple options for taking in information and making sense of ideas. The model of differentiated instruction requires teachers to be flexible in their approach to teaching and adjusting the curriculum and presentation of information to learners rather than expecting students to modify themselves for the curriculum. Classroom teaching is a blend of whole-class, group and individual instruction.
Differentiated Instruction is a teaching theory based on the premise that instructional approaches should vary and be adapted in relation to individual and diverse students in classrooms.

Digital Students @ Anlaog Schools
I attended Alan Novembers BLC06 conference last summer and Marco Torres, was a keynote. In one of his smaller sessions he showed a great movie clipped and asked the audience to promote and share it. Movie: Digital Students @ Analog Schools Students today are native to technology and schools seem to be stuck in the past. They are not accommodating to todays digital learners. Here is a video where students speak out on what it means to be a digital student at a analog school.

Welcome and introductions to Integrating Technology to Support Differentiated Instruction in the Classroom
Welcome to your class blog.
This class is designed to provide you with an overview of emerging technologies to inspire collaboration and provide tools to engage 21st century learners. Some of the technologies will include Blogs, Podcasts, Skype multimedia tools (YouTube, TeacherTube, FlickR and more).
This class will support differentiated instruction models of learning and can be applied to all grade levels and content areas (language arts, social studies, science, math, world language, music, special education, library/study skills, etc). Students will apply this knowledge to an Understanding by Design (UBD) unit.
Please take the following Zoomerang Survey the week prior to class or during our first session. (6/11-6/18).
We will also post a reply to this blog in class. This will provide you with the opportunity to tell us a little about yourself and your experience with technology and any other information you would like to share.
